PROW NEWS – JUNE UPDATES
- Order made to create a new short urban footpath off Margate High Street
This order will create a PROW (TMX45) along the short 30 yard footpath from the lower High Street (the sea end) at GR 353 710, eastwards to the Market Street car park. Hardly rural, but it appears to have been something of an issue locally.
- Order now made to upgrade Sholden footpath ED56 to restricted byway status
As anticipated last month, an order has now been made to upgrade this path. It runs from Sholden church north-eastwards along the Sholden/Deal parish boundary as far as Church Lane. The route already has a tarmac surface and is very well used.
- Order made to upgrade Sutton footpath EE422 to bridleway status
This path runs northwards from Sutton Lane (the lane from Ripple village to Beacon Hill) at GR 343 501, up to and over Beacon Hill and then down again to the road at Little Mongeham (GR 333 509). This also involves renumbering a short section of footpath EE423A as bridleway EE422 at the Little Mongeham end. A very useful route often used on club walks.
Development proposals affecting PROW:
- Proposed new housing at South Court Garage in Great Mongeham village
This proposal is to build 4 houses on the garage site in the centre of the village, opposite the Three Horseshoes pub (Dover Planning ref. 24/00296). The application was originally submitted in April of last year, but things then went very quiet until revised plans were produced this spring. Footpath ED38 – with connections to Sholden, Mongeham church and Northbourne – runs along the north-eastern edge of the site, but once again the existence of the path has not been acknowledged on the new plans, nor is there any reference as to how it may be affected. Consequently KCC PROW have objected to this omission for a second time.
- Manston Green development – proposal for a total of 785 houses east and west of the southern end of Haine Road, Ramsgate
The original outline plans for this development were submitted as long ago as 2014 (Thanet planning ref. 14/0050), and subsequently approved, since when a number of further applications have been made with detailed proposals for the various parts of the site(s). None have so far been rejected, and building work is already progressing east of Haine Road, both north and south of Manston Road. The latest detail proposals have just been submitted under ref. 25/0521, so I thought it might be useful to remind people as to just what is proposed.
The site includes most of the area from Manston Road south to Canterbury Road (the actual southern boundary being the railway), both east and west of Haine Road. Also included is land to the north of Manston Road and east of Haine Road as far north as the Haine Industrial Estate – altogether a very large area. In terms of direct effects on PROW, bridleway TR10, which leaves Haine Road at GR 356 656 heading westwards towards Manston village, will be routed through the new housing in a green corridor. And footpath TR29, immediately to the south of Haine Industrial Estate, will run eastwards from Haine Road at GR 358 661 along the northern boundary of the new development towards Newington.
I can’t get a link to work, but the best small scale overall site plans can be found at Thanet DC planning ref. 14/0050, “Parameter plans” (the oldest documents) especially nos.1 and 3.
