PROW NEWS – October 2024 UPDATES

Woodnesborough parish – new bridleway claimed, west of the road from the village south towards Nonington

Another Hugh Craddock claim of a bridleway running two-thirds of a mile from the junction of the Eastry-Staple road and Ringlemere Lane at GR 296 567 south-westwards to the 90 degree bend in Sandwich Road west of Hammill at GR 290 559.

The northern 55% of the route is already an established track. This would provide a useful extra route connecting onwards to Coombe Lane, Ash, and Marshborough, further north.

  • Eastry footpath EE262 to Shingleton Farm – extinguishment order made

This runs from the A256 to Chillenden road at its junction with Thornton Lane (GR 288 523), north-west to Shingleton Farm (GR 287 526). As it is a cul-de-sac route it gets almost no use from walkers, being also blocked in places, so should not be a huge loss.

  • Aylesham – minor diversions in connection with new house building

You may have seen in the press that the diversions of Aylesham footpaths EE288 and EE261 have now come into force – meaning that KCC are satisfied with the new routes which are now in place. These two are in the new residential development in the north of the village between Cornwallis Avenue and Ratling Road – essentially along the development’s edge or through green corridors. Possibly not of great relevance to rural ramblers but essential to protect the integrity of the PROW network.

Development proposals affecting PROW

  • Birchington – proposal for 1,600 houses on land north and south of Canterbury Road (the A28), west of the village

The most contentious proposal in our area right now. This huge development would affect footpaths TM37 (via a railway crossing NW to Minnis Bay), TM32 (SW to Great Brooksend), and TM31 (westwards from the B2050, south of the Quex Park entrance). Plenty of information can be found via Google, but if you live in the area you will know all about it. A Thanet DC Planning Committee meeting was held on 4 and 5 September, but a decision was deferred as Councillors expressed concerns. The news item covering the meeting can be read here: https://www.kentonline.co.uk/thanet/news/grim-night-for-developers-behind-bid-for-1-600-home-estate-312454/

  • Dover District

Nothing new to report here as the September DDC Planning Committee meeting was cancelled and the agenda for the 10 October session has not yet been published.
